"Market Beauties"
Inle Lake, Burma

These young girls from the Pa-O tribe were selling vegetables at a covered market on an island in Inle Lake. The yellow part of their makeup is a paste that the Burmese wear which they believe keeps the complexion clear and helps protect the skin from the sun. The overall effect to my Western eyes is that of beautifully painted models showing off their youthful femininity in a strangely sexy way.
