"Initiates"
Rangoon, Burma

I'd come downstairs and outside from my hotel when three young monks appeared from the street and sat on the wall in front of me. I was on my way next door to buy some bottles of water and a bottle of beer for the evening. Since I go nowhere on my journeys without my photo backpack and tripod on my back, I had no problem postponing my errand and setting up my equipment. I had opportunity for but one hastily composed photograph before more little monks joined their friends on the wall. I moved my tripod mounted camera back until I was against the wall and composed this photograph. I had no part in arranging these boys in this pleasing configuration. Two things made Rangoon unique for me when I thought about it later. This is the only place I've ever been where I found myself hanging out with monks. One monk in particular befriended me and we took daily walks around this area which was dominated by the enormous golden pagodas of Shwedagon Paya. I've never seen as many rats anywhere as in Burma.
