"Glacial Melt"
Franz Josef Glacier, South Island, New Zealand
This particular glacier was in a growing phase. It was so
enormous that it created its own ecosystem. One that I eventually considered
somewhat malevolent. At least three times I composed an image, set up my tripod,
began to set up my camera-only to have it rain buckets. Without getting a
picture I would have to cover up my camera to avoid wet electronics, break my
tripod down, and find cover. Meantime I discovered that eventually GoreTex
breaks down and becomes permeable. I got soaked. Finally I captured this image
which conveys some of the beauty of this strange place.
